If you want to come to the U.S. and go to school, you will need a student visa. This visa allows you to stay in the U.S. legally throughout the duration of your time at school.

According to the U.S. Department of State, you will have to complete a consular interview to determine if you qualify for a student visa. You can improve your chances of obtaining a student visa by properly preparing for this interview.

1. Prepare to explain your reasoning

The interviewer may ask you some common visa interview questions during your appointment, so you should prepare answers to these questions beforehand. Some of these questions may include why you want to go to a particular university, what you plan to do after you graduate and what you intend to study.

2. Talk about your country and family

The officer conducting the interview at the consulate may ask you about your ties to your home country. If you have children or a spouse, the interviewer will likely ask how you will support them during your time studying abroad.

3. Listen carefully to the questions

Think carefully about every question the interviewer asks you during your appointment. In addition to preparing answers to some common student visa interview questions, remember to keep your answers to the point and succinct.

Present a confident, positive image throughout your student visa interview. Remain calm and remember that this interview is just a part of the process that goes into obtaining a student visa.
